WIDPSC Hong Kong Debate Team Trials

On Saturday 18th January, three STC students represented Sha Tin College at the WIDPSC Hong Kong Debate Team Trials. The event was hosted by Renaissance College.

Mary Anne Ko (Y10), Reese Wong (Y12) and Belle Ho (Y12) competed in four rounds to test their debating and public speaking skills. They debated the motions ‘This House believes that historical monuments that embody outdated values should be torn down‘ and ‘This house believes that industries which cause mass unemployment through automation should be taxed to fund a universal basic income.’ They also read an interpretative piece from a novel or poem of their choice, presented a persuasive speech on a topic of their choice and completed an impromptu speaking challenge based on a random prompt. All of the students should be very proud of their achievements for competing!

This year Belle Ho broke into the Hong Kong national team. She will be coached by top debaters and then represent Hong Kong in the World Schools competition in Shanghai in April 2020. Well done to Belle!
