Book Week 2015 – ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’

Book Week is an annual event held here at Sha Tin College, allowing students and teachers to celebrate their love of reading, books, and English. This year’s Book Week took place from March 2 to 6, 2015; it was a week filled with many exciting and interesting activities.

The theme for this year was ‘The Edge of Tomorrow’, inspired by books of dystopia and utopia settings. Under this category are well-known books such as ‘The Hunger Games’ triology, ‘The Maze Runner’ trilogy, and many others.

Students of Sha Tin College participated in a number of events, a particular favourite being the inter-house Book Quiz. The Quiz was a cut-throat competition between the best of the best readers, each showing off their in-depth knowledge of books, including ‘Harry Potter’, ‘The Great Gatsby’, and ‘The Mortal Instruments’.

Another event received well by the student body was the World Book Day non-uniform day. Individuals dressed up in elaborate costumes of their favourite dystopian/utopian characters, impressing their friends and teachers.

Nury Vittachi, well-known for his The Feng Shui Detective series, visited STC on World Book Day, giving highly entertaining talks to the several year groups. He discussed the secrets to writing a good story, the repeated formula that authors use when writing their books, and his overall enthusiasm for books.

Though Book Week has passed, the Read-A-Thon continues to progress. This fundraising activity aims to raise money for Room to Read, a charity that provides underprivileged children all over the world with education. Students must read for intervals, collecting sponsors from those willing to contribute.

Another year, another successful Book Week. Thank you to the English department and the Library and Learning Centre for arranging the events and running the week, and to the students who took part in them!
