Letter from the Principal – 100% of our students learning, 50% in school

Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,

I hope you are all looking forward to the return to school as much as we are. There is quite a lot of important information below which we hope you find helpful and reassuring as you prepare to return.

Return to School Schedule: May 25th – June 5th

The schedule below makes it clear which year levels should be on campus from May 25th – June 5th. In line with our Return to School Plan approved by EDB we will have no more than 50% of our students on campus at any one time. Students can expect to be on campus every second day except for Year 12 who will be in every day. Years 11 and 13 students should continue with their specially designed online courses during this initial stage. Students can access the campus from 7.45am. The campus will not be open to students before 7:45am.

Returning to Campus

We have put together a short video to introduce you to some of our new procedures to help you prepare for our return to school.

Temperature Taking

Please take your child’s temperature prior to sending them to school. If their temperature is above 37.5 they MUST remain at home. On their first day back to school each student will be given a Temperature Recording Sheet. Thereafter you must record your child’s temperature every morning on the Temperature Recording Sheet and the student must bring the sheet to school every day. Tutors will be checking the Temperature Recording Sheet. Upon arrival on campus students will have their temperature taken. Students with a temperature above 37.5 will be sent to the Nurse for follow-up. If a student’s temperature is above 37.5 as confirmed by the Nurse the student will be asked to return home. We have four temperature taking stations. If the queue is lengthy at one station students should use an alternative station.

Travel & Health Declaration

Please ensure you have completed the Travel & Health Declaration prior to your child returning to school. If this Gateway eNotice Declaration is not completed students will not be permitted on campus.

Masks

All students, staff and guests entering the campus MUST be wearing a mask. Students must bring their own masks. There are bins distributed throughout the campus for the safe disposal of used masks. We have a supply of extra masks if needed.

Break & Lunch – Food & Water

There is no canteen or cafe provision. Students MUST bring a packed lunch and snack and a filled water bottle. Water bottles can be refilled at the water fountain but students cannot drink directly from the water fountain. Students will not be permitted to receive deliveries of food from outside vendors or helpers/parents visiting the campus. Eating lunch or snack in tutor rooms and classrooms is not permitted under CHP guidelines. These rooms will be closed to students during both break times. The Hall, the canteen and outside seating has been provided so that students can be seated to eat their food. During the second break we will run two sessions to allow students to eat. Session 1: 12.15 – 12.35 and Session 2: 12.50 – 1.15. The eating spaces will be cleaned between sessions and supervised by staff.

Free time

During break/lunch times and while not eating students are free to walk around the campus. While students won’t be able to return to their classrooms during breaks, walking around the outside spaces will allow students the opportunity to get some fresh air and some exercise. Students should follow a 1 metre social distancing at all times. As per our normal routine teachers will be actively on duty during break/lunch times.

PE Lessons

While we still intend to have PE lessons we will not be able to give students access to the changing rooms. On days where students have PE they are allowed to arrive at school in their PE uniform and wear it all day. Masks will be worn for low intensity activity. For moderate to high intensity activity, masks can be removed.

Teaching Spaces

To maximise the amount of floor space all lockers have been removed from classrooms. Students should be able to locate their locker outside their normal tutor room. As students will be on campus for 50% of the time students should not be leaving materials and equipment in their lockers overnight.

Library

Book lending from the library is suspended. Students can use the library during breaks but must bring their own reading books/ebooks if they wish to read. We have an extensive list of digital resources and online databases that have been made available to students.

CHP Health Notices & Reminders

There are CHP health guidelines throughout the campus and in bathrooms to remind students of proper hygiene.

One-way system: Stairs

To facilitate social distancing we are operating a one-way system with identified up-only and down-only stairs. Students are asked to follow the appropriate signs and arrows.

Bus Service

The ESF Kong Shing bus service is operating. Please check our website or contact Kong Shing directly for information. Parents who use private buses should contact those bus companies directly.

There is no doubt that some of the logistics below make the return to school challenging. Our safe return is based upon each individual following these guidelines in order to help keep each other safe. Of course we will speak with our students about all of the above prior to their return. We would also appreciate parents/guardians impressing upon their children the importance of complying with these recommendations.

In spite of the challenges however we have been waiting for this moment for months and we are very much looking forward to welcoming our students back next week!

See you soon!

Kind regards,

Carol Larkin
