Finalised IB Diploma Results
Sha Tin College is extremely proud of another excellent set of IB Diploma results. What is particularly remarkable about the students’ achievements is that Sha Tin College is an inclusive school, catering for students of almost all abilities. It is pleasing that this year’s students achieved an average Diploma score of 37.6 (a new STC and ESF record), compared with the ESF average of 35.8 and world average of 30.0 points.
This year, we have seven students who achieved the full 45 points: Andrian Chan, Clement Chiu, Beatrice Li, George Shen, Ryan Wan, Wing Sze Yu and Cheryl Wong. This is an amazing achievement, given that only 0.3% of candidates worldwide were awarded the maximum 45 points. Another five students have achieved 44 points: Dione Hodges, Sean Kwan, Sami Wong, James Young and Enpei Zhang. Overall, 44 of our students (33%) have achieved 40 or more points (compared to 8% worldwide).
Table 1: Number of STC candidates achieving 40+ points (May 2018)
A further fourteen students achieved 39 points, and sixteen others achieved 38 points. This means a total of 74 students (56%) achieved 38+ points, which is the equivalent to the GCE A Level equivalent of A*AA. This further demonstrates that Sha Tin College students are able to achieve a great deal of success, comparable with some of the most able candidates in the world.
In addition, ten students have been awarded the Bilingual Diploma: Austin Chen, Dominic Chow, Adrian Lau, Ashley Lau, Stephanie Leung, Samuel Wah, Jeff Wong, Andy Yau, Jennifer Yu and Rosalyn Yu.
Students scored an average of 5.9 points (out of 7) per subject, matching the previous record in 2016 and 2017. The percentage of our students awarded the IB Diploma is an impressive 99.2%, which is more than 20% above the worldwide average for IB Schools. It is also the joint-second highest pass rate in STC history.
A remarkable 36 students (27.5%) achieved the full 3 marks for the extended essay (EE) and theory of knowledge (TOK) components of the IB Diploma. For TOK, 21.2% of students achieved an A grade, and 100% achieved at least a C grade. For the EE, 28.8% of students achieved an A grade, and 94% attained at least a C grade. Completion of the CAS programme is not included as part of the IB scores, but remains a formal requirement for being awarded the IB Dipoma. All STC students were successful in passing the CAS requirements.
Whilst we are extremely proud of the students mentioned above, we are also particularly proud of the many students who fulfilled their personal potential and the students who were expected to find the Diploma Programme particularly challenging. Through sheer hard work and determination, these students have managed to achieve more than the 24 points needed to pass the IB Diploma.
We are also tremendously proud of our IB Courses students, who achieved an impressive average of 4.85 points per subject. We also had our first cohort of students graduate from the Learning Support Centre (LSC), who followed a number of pathways, including the IB DP, IB Courses, and bespoke programmes. All LSC students have been successful in securing places at university and institutions of higher education.
Average grades for IB subjects at Sha Tin College are well above worldwide averages for all IB subject groups, and this is an indication that our students are achieving well across the curriculum.
