What is your name?
Helen Shin
Where are you studying?
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), HKSAR
What is your major?
Journalism and Communication
How do you describe your University?
CUHK has an extremely chilling environment. There are more than 50 appetizing canteens to choose from, we also have more day-offs than other universities, and most importantly, I love that we have a close, warm community. I particularly like a special culture our school holds, which is called 送暖, where we write short memo notes, stick them on a tiny gift and give it to our friends. Their kind words cheer me up a lot!
What is the happiest experience in your first year?
Joining my first-ever orientation camp was my most memorable and happiest experience at CUHK. Everyone in our camp “dam beat” our major and our college together. The local culture was pretty new to me so I had fun learning all the Cantonese catchphrases and got to know more friends as well. Luckily, I do not need to sit alone in classes now after knowing my orientation mates!
What is your top tip/advice that you will give to Sha Tin College students on their Higher Education?
It would help a lot to ask people who are studying at the university about the learning environment, community, and culture. Make sure to choose a major that you actually enjoy and would be willing to spend at least 4 academic years studying about it! Researching the curriculum of the major is as well important because an identical major in several schools offers slightly different courses.
