The Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s 20th annual ‘Stride for a Cure’ walkathon

Dear Parents and Students
The Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s 20th annual ‘Stride for a Cure’ walkathon
Sha Tin College students have been asked by Hong Kong Cancer Fund to participate again in the 20th annual walkathon, a sponsored event to help raise funds for vital cancer research programmes, vaccines and screenings in Hong Kong:
  • Preventing Bowel Cancer – this is a programme used to detect individuals that have a high risk of developing bowel cancer.  Approximately 4,000 men and women every year are newly diagnosed with bowel cancer in Hong Kong.
  • Minimising Nasopharyngeal Cancer – research into developing a vaccine to prevent the Epstein Barr virus from causing nasopharyngeal cancers and improving the treatment and quality of life for NPC sufferers.
  • Pinpointing the Needs of Cancer Patients – a psychosocial study to assess the needs of cancer patients upon completion of treatment.
Last year over 250 Sha Tin College students participated and raised over HKD$150,000 for Hong Kong Cancer Fund and as a school we were awarded the School Cup for raising the most money. This year, our challenge is to raise over and above this amount to help Hong Kong Cancer Fund reach their target of HKD4.5 million.
This year’s event is called ‘Stride for a Cure – Every Step Counts’. It will take place on Sunday 22nd November at the Hong Kong International School and the sponsored walk will take place in Tai Tam Country Park.  Students will need to transport themselves to Central Star Ferry Pier No. 5, where buses will depart to HKIS from 7.45am onwards with the last bus leaving at 8.15am.
Participants can choose to walk/run 5km or 10km through Tai Tam Country Park.  Before the event, all students will receive a picnic lunch, a T-shirt and a goody bag.  All the event participants will be accompanied by event marshals and the St John’s Ambulance will be present to provide first aid provision should it be needed.  At least two members of staff from Sha Tin College will be in attendance with medical forms and emergency contact details should the need arise.  Afterwards free transportation to the Central Star Ferry Pier will be provided by the Hong Kong Cancer Fund.  Those wishing to take part in the event will have to make a pledge to raise at least HK$400.
If you wish to participate, please follow the instructions on the following pages and return the permission slip to a member of the SFAC team by Monday 5th October.
Yours faithfully
