Identity – Year 10 student work
Student wellbeing has always been at the heart of Sha Tin College. We believe that relationships are our strength and that all behaviour is communication. At Sha Tin College our Wellbeing Curriculum is where we explicitly build knowledge and skills for wellbeing. This curriculum is also developed to suit the needs of our students and to further align with our IB curriculum programmes.
The purpose of our Wellbeing Curriculum is to support our learning community in leading flourishing lives, through understanding ourselves and others and developing agency for responsible action. Our curriculum framework guides each year group through five key themes – Identity, Character, Relationships, Health, and Aspirations. Through teaching and learning experiences, students will also develop the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills of self-management, communication, thinking, research and social skills. The content of the Wellbeing Curriculum combines Social-Emotional Learning, Relationships & Sexuality Education, personal reflection and awareness of our community.
Our tutors teach our Wellbeing Curriculum during one lesson per week, engaging in topics and discussions not necessarily explored in other subjects. One of the biggest opportunities of this approach is that it gives tutors a chance to further connect and develop a better understanding of, and relationship with, their tutees. Tutors and tutees build a stronger rapport and bond and benefit from the opportunity to explore and engage with issues of wellbeing in a safe, inclusive and familiar environment.
All students recently looked at the topic of Identity, and Year 10 students focused on how the strengths of the STC community create a shared sense of community identity. Feedback from all students was positive, with many commenting on understanding more about character strengths. “I learned that everyone will have their strengths and weaknesses and we must all embrace them.” “I have learnt that other people’s perspectives on you can be a lot different than what you think about yourself.”
As this programme continues to grow and deepen, we look forward to showcasing more student work and to strengthening our partnership with parents and the community in designing students’ learning experiences.
