Gifted & Talented Programmes for Students 2021/22
Dear Parents, Guardians and students,
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Mr. Jackson the school’s new Gifted & Talented (G&T) coordinator. I will be responsible for helping students identified as G&T throughout their middle and senior school education. Hopefully students are now settled back into the school year and enjoying a more normal start to an academic year, so it’s important that I draw your attention to the range of opportunities and programs in place to help G&T students.
At Sha Tin College, we encourage all learners to achieve their potential and pursue a range of interests. Curriculum leaders and classroom teachers develop differentiated schemes of work and lesson plans to provide stimulating curricula, catering to all learners. We use both subject achievement indicators (through teacher recommendation), and objective measures (through standardised CEM assessment data), to identify students who are achieving and functioning at higher levels than expected for their age group.
Even during these uncertain and challenging times, we offer a range of extracurricular and CAS activities; our students can participate in a range of competitions, academic programs and performing arts. Please regularly peruse the school website to learn about the different competitions during the course of the year. Outside of school, several agencies offer a wide range of courses for students to explore and extend their skills. I have outlined below some of the many opportunities that exist in Hong Kong and beyond.
HKAGE ( https://www.hkage.org.hk/)
The Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) is a non- governmental organisation providing support to all gifted students aged 10-18 and their parents across Hong Kong. The HKAGE is currently advertising courses for this term. Additionally, application for membership of the academy is open; our school can nominate up to 50 students for their English, Mathematics and Science online screening programmes. Please fill out the google form if you are interested, and follow the link for more information.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST)
Gifted Education Development Centre (https://www.cdgt.ust.hk/eng/index.php)
The Centre has been committed to providing professional and comprehensive gifted programmes for students from Hong Kong since 2010. Their objective is to foster the full development of gifted students by providing long-term and diversified gifted programmes. Currently, they are offering “Dual Program 2021” with the objective of providing opportunities for accelerated learning in Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry/Life Science/Engineering. Details of the programme are on this link. Please fill out the google form if you are interested
Program for the Gifted and Talented (PGT), Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
(https://www.fed.cuhk.edu.hk/pgt/Home/index_e.php)
PGT regularly organises the spring, summer and winter programmes for gifted and talented students from Y7 to Y13. The courses offered in these programmes are specially designed to provide highly challenging, out-of-school learning opportunities which will enable participants to explore and develop their potential in an enriched learning environment. Students can directly apply to the university on its website.
John Hopkins Centre for Talented Youth (https://cty.jhu.edu/)
Within Hong Kong, the ‘Johns Hopkins University Centre for Talented Youth’ aims to identify and develop the talents of advanced learners worldwide. They are currently offering an online program for students who can self-enrol. Students need to join the CTY, complete an entrance test, see their result and pick an appropriate course.
Stanford University – Pre collegiate Studies( https://spcs.stanford.edu/ )
Based in the USA but with international outreach, Stanford University offers courses in a wide variety of disciplines: Humanities, Science, Mathematics, Arts, Music, Business, and Social Sciences. For further details, please visit their website and follow the link.
Online Enrichment
Aside from the opportunities listed above, there are online courses available for students to augment their learning in the domains of their interest. In the past, the following links have proven to be effective, especially last year, and efficient as most of the courses offered are affiliated with top universities.
If the HKAGE or the HKUST courses are of interest can you please fill out this google form so I can start the enrolment process.
If you have any questions regarding these programmes, please email me on pij@stconline.edu.hk
Yours sincerely,
