The Hong Kong Cancer Fund’s 21st annual ‘Stride for a Cure’ walkathon

Dear Parents and Students
Sha Tin College students have been asked by Hong Kong Cancer Fund to participate again in their 21st annual walkathon, a sponsored event to help raise funds for vital cancer research programmes, vaccines and screenings in Hong Kong:
  • Preventing Bowel Cancer – this is a programme used to detect individuals that have a high risk of developing bowel cancer.  Approximately 4,000 men and women every year are newly diagnosed with bowel cancer in Hong Kong.
  • Minimising Nasopharyngeal Cancer – research into developing a vaccine to prevent the Epstein Barr virus from causing nasopharyngeal cancers and improving the treatment and quality of life for NPC sufferers.
  • Pinpointing the Needs of Cancer Patients – a psychosocial study to assess the needs of cancer patients upon completion of treatment.
Last year over 250 Sha Tin College students participated and raised over HKD$175,000 for Hong Kong Cancer Fund.  This was a record for us and as a school we were awarded the School Cup for raising the most money for Hong Kong Cancer Fund. This year, our challenge is to raise over and above this amount to help Hong Kong Cancer Fund reach their target of HKD3 million.
‘Stride for a Cure – Every Step Counts’ will take place on Sunday 18th December (the first Sunday of our Christmas holidays).  The Christmas walkathon starts and finishes at Hong Kong International School and participants walk/run either 5km or 10km through Tai Tam Country Park.  On the morning of the walk, students will need to transport themselves to Central Star Ferry Pier No. 5, where free buses will depart to HKIS from 7.45am onwards with the last bus leaving at 8.15am. After the event, free transportation to Central Star Ferry Pier will be provided for all participants. These free shuttle buses are provided by Hong Kong Cancer Fund.
Please be advised that this is a Hong Kong Cancer Fund organized event, and not a Sha Tin College organized event and, therefore, there will not be the usual teacher/student ratio at the event.  I will be in attendance, as will our 25-strong SFAC organizing team of Year 12 students, but the main organisers, marshals, stewards and First Aid practitioners will all be provided by Hong Kong Cancer Fund.  There are event marshals throughout the route and the St John’s Ambulance will be present to provide first aid provision should it be needed.  Hong Kong Cancer Fund also provide all participants with a free SFAC T-shirt, a packed lunch and a goody bag and, this year, they promise lots of Christmas festive surprises.  We have a strong tradition at Sha Tin College for supporting SFAC’s annual walkathon, and hundreds of our students have participated in previous years.  Students who have taken part in the past can vouch that this is a fun, memorable, safe and meaningful event and students from all year groups have participated.
Those wishing to take part in the event will have to make a pledge to raise at least HK$400. Once a student has handed in his/her permission slip and a cheque for $400 to a member of the SFAC organizing team at school, s/he will be given a sponsorship form and can start collecting sponsors.  Cheques for pledges and permission slips can be handed in from Monday 19th September-Monday 24th October. Although the deadline for this $400 pledge is Monday 24th October, participation is on a first come first serve basis and once our 250 places have been allocated, we cannot accept any more participants. A cheque for any additional sponsorship money raised will need to be handed in to one of our SFAC team members at school on Monday 14th November.  All cheques need to be written out to SHA TIN COLLEGE. If your son/daughter would like to participate, please follow the instructions below and complete the permission slip as directed.
I hope this is all clear, however, should parents have any queries or questions about the event, please do not hesitate to contact me either via email tandyl1@stconline.edu.hk or telephone 2699 1811.
I am really looking forward to walking with many of your sons and daughters on 18th December.
Thank you for your support.
Yours sincerely
Lindsay Tandy
