Our Rising Tennis Star Cameron Yeung

Cameron Yeung, a promising young tennis talent from Sha Tin College, is currently ranked 1602nd in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tour, with a career-high ranking of 1394th. Representing Hong Kong, she is the 3rd-ranked U16 player.

This journey in tennis began at the age of four when her parents introduced her to the sport. Her parent’s love for tennis sparked her initial interest, which soon became a passion. By six Cameron was training regularly, and by eleven, she was selected for the Hong Kong team, marking the start of her competitive career.

Although representing Hong Kong at such a young age is pressuring, Cameron is grateful for what she has experienced and views these experiences as an honour and a privilege. This responsibility motivates her to push her limits and perform her best, no matter the circumstances. Cameron favours hard courts, which are more commonly found in Hong Kong. This prevalently found surface complements her aggressive baseliner style, allowing her to leverage her strength during matches.

On a typical training day, Cameron’s routine starts at 4:30 AM and ends at 7:30 AM. Her workout includes two hours of tennis and an hour of fitness training, focusing on strength, endurance, or speed. She trains six days a week and if that isn’t enough…she goes to private tennis lessons and fitness sessions to enhance her skills and performance. With a seemingly already busy schedule, Cameron also has to manage the demands of school which can get challenging at times, especially during exam or tournament seasons. Cameron manages by creating structured study and training schedules, ensuring she remains on track and allowing her to perform at her best on and off the court.

One of her most memorable experiences on the court is a gruelling four-hour match in extreme heat during an international tournament in Hong Kong, which she won. Another highlight was her victory in her first international doubles tournament in Thailand, affirming her ability to compete at an international level and fuelling her determination to excel.

Goals and Inspirations
In the short term, Cameron aims to improve her junior international runs by participating in more international tournaments. In the long term, Cameron aspires to further her education and tennis career in the United States, hoping to gain entry or a scholarship to a university where she can play college tennis and achieve success in larger international tournaments.

Here Cameron talks about Naomi Osaka; a tennis player who inspires her:
“Naomi Osaka is an inspiration for me because she became the first Asian player to reach the number one ranking in tennis and has many impressive achievements, including winning multiple Grand Slam titles, which are the biggest tournaments in tennis. She has also utilised her platform and resources to make a positive impact through charitable work, such as advocating for racial equality and being involved in philanthropic work.”

Outside of tennis, Cameron enjoys activities that help her relax, such as building Legos and reading books, which provide a balance to her busy schedule.

Cameron Yueng exemplifies the devotion and talents that are rising from Hong Kong, and we are eager to witness how her story evolves. I hope her story will motivate young athletes to achieve their goals with determination and balance.
