IB Diploma Results: May 2019
Sha Tin College is extremely proud to announce another outstanding set of IB Diploma results. What is particularly remarkable about the students’ achievements is that Sha Tin College is an inclusive school, catering for students of almost all abilities. It is extremely pleasing that this year’s students achieved an average Diploma point score of 37.6, compared with the ESF average of 35.8 and world average of 29.8 points.
This year, we have a record eleven students who achieved the full 45 points: Yann Chan, Jing Chen Fok, Sammie Lam, Jonathan Lee, Megan Lee, Cana Leung, Brian Li, Carliss Ling, Sherry Wang, Alex Xia and Jonathan Zein. This is an amazing achievement, given that less than 0.3% of candidates worldwide were awarded the maximum 45 points. Another three students have achieved 44 points: Ching Hei Cheng, Julian Poon and Amber Yeung. We also had nine students who achieved 43 points: Man Lam Cheng, Katrina Fenton, Claire Jung, Munisa Khan, Matina Liu, Rachel Tong (Bilingual Diploma), Tanaya Wagh, Tom Yao and Wind Yuen. Our ten students who achieved 42 points were: Angus Chan (Bilingual Diploma), Ryan Kirkwood, Shun Yat Mok, Natasha Schwarze, Crystal Sek, Rachel Sham, Marcus Tam, Adrian Wong, Cherry Wong, and Christina Wong. All of the aforementioned students were invited to attend the ESF Chairman’s Award for Excellence at South Island School on Wednesday 7th August. Overall, 57 students (37.3% of the Diploma cohort) achieved 40 or more points (compared to the worldwide average of less than 8%).

A further fifteen students achieved 39 points, and thirteen others achieved 38 points. This means a total of 85 students (55.6%) achieved 38+ points, which is the GCE A Level equivalent of A*AA. This further demonstrates that Sha Tin College students are able to achieve results that are comparable with some of the most academically able students in the world.
In addition, nine students have been awarded the Bilingual Diploma: Leo Au, Peter Chen, Nicolas Cheung, Jiaying Huang, Angus Chan, Alfred Chong, Chantal Eden, Emil Ladegaard and Rachel Tong.
Overall, STC students scored an average of 5.88 points (out of 7) per subject, only slightly below the record of 5.9 set in 2016 and 2017. The percentage of our students awarded the IB Diploma is an impressive 99.3%, which is more than 21% above the worldwide average for IB Schools.
IBO Worldwide data for May 2019 is not yet available so May 2018 data has been provided. The worldwide data has stayed fairly consistent over the last few years.
A record 58 students (37.9%) achieved the full 3 marks for the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) components of the IB Diploma. Overall, 130 Diploma students (84.9%) achieved 2+ points for TOK and EE. Completion of the CAS programme is not included as part of the IB points score, but remains a formal requirement for being awarded the IB Dipoma. All STC students were successful in fulfilling the CAS requirements.
Whilst we are extremely proud of the students mentioned above, we are also particularly proud of the many students who fulfilled their personal potential and the students who were expected to find the Diploma Programme particularly challenging. Through sheer hard work and determination, these students have managed to achieve at least the 24 points needed to pass the IB Diploma.
Average grades for IB subjects at Sha Tin College are well above worldwide averages for all IB subject groups, and this is an indication that our students are achieving well across the curriculum.

We are also tremendously proud of our eight IB Courses students. They all did very well in their individually chosen pathways. For example, one student chose not to take a Group 1 subject, but still achieved 28 points and an A grade in the Extended Essay and a C grade in TOK. Another IB Courses student chose not to take a Group 3 subject, but did extremely well to also achieve 28 points, including passing the Core (EE, TOK and CAS).
We are also very proud of our staff. Sha Tin College is very fortunate to employ an extremely talented and professional group of teachers and support staff who have worked tirelessly to support our students.
Finally, Sha Tin College wishes to acknowledge its graduating students on their record-breaking achievements, many of whom have secured higher education places in a variety of prestigious universities across the world.
