IB CAS – resent with reply slip

 IB CAS

Dear Parents/Guardians of Year 12,

Creativity, Activity and Service, commonly referred to as CAS, is a core part of the IB Diploma.  This unique programme is a framework for experiential learning, designed to involve students in new and meaningful roles. The emphasis is on learning by doing real tasks that have real consequences, and then reflecting on these experiences over time.

As a part of their CAS, students will participate in a variety of experiences in a variety of settings.  Some will be facilitated by the school and take place on campus, others will be organised by outside providers, or the student themselves, and will involve students travelling to various locations in Hong Kong, outside of the supervision of the school. This letter is to inform parents/caregivers of the different types of CAS that students might participate in, and the responsibilities involved in taking steps to ensure student safety during CAS participation.  It also serves to request your acknowledgement of the various risk assessment processes.

The following table outlines the four types of CAS and the Risk Assessment processes to be followed in each.

Though the school strongly encourages students to participate in a variety of experiences around Hong Kong, some of which may be risky by their nature, much of this participation is not supervised by the school.  As such, the school does not bear responsibility for assessing risks or taking steps to ensure student safety within these experiences.  The responsibility for this falls on the organisation offering the activity, and/or the student (and parents).  The school will provide students with some risk assessment guidelines that can be followed in these situations to help ensure safe participation.

Mr. Richard Overens

CAS Coordinator

Parental Acknowledgement slip     (please return to CAS Advisor)

I have read the outline of various types of CAS participation and I am aware that CAS may involve my child participating in experiences outside of school hours, and not under direct supervision from the school.  In these situations, I understand that the school is not responsible for the organization or supervision of these events, and that I and my child should follow the recommended steps to help ensure their safe participation.
