- What are the challenges in transitioning from high school to university?
One of the greatest challenges when transitioning to university would be not fully understanding the syllabus or the passing requirements of the course! The structure of lessons are very different and not familiarising yourself enough with such information can really be a big stress factor later on in the semester!
- What is the greatest experience in your first year university studies?
I think that my university life has been made up of many small but great moments and interactions with others! But the greatest experience so far would be hall life because it was refreshing to be a part of such a close knit community. I was put in a scholars and international hall, and I noticed that the drive of the people around me always provided a boost of motivation to work harder!
In terms of academics, it is really exciting to study things that you are interested in and be offered classes that have real world impact! For example, I have a module where I get to work with engineers in the NTU Dyson Lab to create a prototype of my own invention that tackles a real world problem! So this was also one of my greatest experiences.
- What is the biggest challenge that you have had so far in your year one study (e.g. home sick)?
I think one challenge I faced would be the language barrier. There are lots of Singaporean slangs that I didn’t know and it really took me a while to learn them and understand them in conversations.
- Tips / advice to the STC high school students on their HE planning / applications?
I think one tip is to thoroughly research the degree course. Many students may be distracted by rankings or entry requirements, but those don’t matter if you end up studying something you don’t enjoy, which means you cannot enjoy your university life to the fullest!
