STC Speed Skaters in the Hong Kong Team

In the world of sports, competing at the national level is no easy task and isn’t for everyone. Thus, if witnessing such greatness in an individual isn’t outstanding enough, seeing twins excelling in the same discipline is nothing short of an extraordinary phenomenon. This phenomenon is Kiefer Choi and Cadence Choi.

The twins’ journey into the world of speed skating began serendipitously. Cadence recalls. “Before I started, I did figure skating, and then one morning, my dad saw people doing speed skating. He thought I could be a part of it because I like running.” Kiefer (being there with Cadence that morning) was also encouraged by their father to give the sport a try, and it was this very morning that set the twins on a path that would lead them to represent Hong Kong on the international stage.

However, this path was no easy path, as to play at such a high level, training is no small feat. Kiefer and Cadence’s regimen is intense, with summer training taking place overseas in China, where they practised for weeks with strict schedules. “We trained every day, 7-8 hours at a time with no phones, and everything was so strict,” Kiefer shares. Cadence adds, “Our coaches help us by identifying our weaknesses and improving them so we can get faster.” Despite the gruelling schedules, the twins appreciate the support they receive from their coaches and each other. Kiefer remarks, “In the overseas training event in China, I sharpen the blades sometimes,” highlighting how they support each other in practical ways and the closely-knit bonds they have.

One of the major challenges the twins face is the lack of suitable training facilities in Hong Kong. “There’s barely any ice rinks in Hong Kong, and it’s not Olympic size,” Kiefer explains. This limitation means they often have to travel to places like Discovery Bay for proper training, which can be very time-consuming. Yet, they push through these obstacles with the same determination that characterises their approach to skating.

This determination and perseverance paid off at this year’s SEA Trophy Manila Series, where Kiefer won a gold and two bronze medals, and Cadence secured three silver medals. Reflecting on their achievements, Cadence says, “It was my second time getting overseas medals. I kind of already know my competitors, so I wasn’t that nervous.” Kiefer, who won his first overseas medals, found the experience thrilling and slightly nerve-wracking. “It’s more competitive overseas, but not a lot more, just a few more countries,” he notes.

When asked who inspires them, the twins credit their coaches, who are accomplished athletes themselves. “Our coach is an Olympic champion,” Kiefer says with admiration. Their shared goal is to continue winning medals, with aspirations to compete in larger competitions such as the Asian Open. “Maybe get a gold medal,” Cadence hopes, looking towards future challenges.

Outside the rink, the twins enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Cadence mentions listening to music to relax, while Kiefer enjoys watching TV shows in his downtime. Despite their busy schedules, they find time to connect with friends, both at school and in training.

Looking ahead, it seems the future is bright for Cadence and Kiefer Choi. Their achievements at such a young age are just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey in speed skating. With their talent, dedication, and support for each other, they continue to dominate on the ice rink. We should proudly cheer them both on, and be eager to see what heights they will achieve. The sky’s the limit for them.
