Paving the Path to Success

Following the success of the new “Above and Beyond” awards established earlier on in this academic year, a new award scheme has been launched to recognize the commendable competence of younger year groups. Whilst the “Above and Beyond” awards recognize students in Years 9 through 11 for their contributions outside of academics, the new lower school awards open doors for Year 7s and 8s reflect on and share their accomplishments with others.

The new Lower School Awards primarily serve to value the holistic nature of their Lower School Experience, and to help Year 7s and 8s document evidence of student achievement. By establishing this new award scheme, younger students are not only able to identify and reflect on their progress over the academic year, but are also able to examine their different ‘approaches to learning’ (ATL).

Another aspect that adds on to the specialty of this award scheme is the fact that Sha Tin College is the first ESF secondary school to launch this award scheme, using the software Evidencer- a confirmation of their accomplishments.

The past week has been spent introducing this new award to the young students, each day involving exciting games and quizzes to help the students familiarize themselves with the different ATLs. Since the Y9 student leaders are in charge of checking the younger students’ progress, delivering presentations, and other roles, they were rushing here and there to make sure each Y7 student understood their given tasks.

“I think this is a good experience for the Y7s,” said Kyris Lam of 9X2, “because the Y7s can reflect on their school year and this can benefit them when they’re older.”

Raf Han of 9D1 added: “It’s a great idea for the Y7s and a much easier way for them to share what they’ve achieved at school with their teachers and parents.”

Good luck to all the Year 7s and 8s!
