Y7 & Y8 Helper Appreciation Day

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to inform you about some events we have coming up in the Lower School to celebrate Helper Appreciation Day.

May is Helper Appreciation Month in Hong Kong, and Sunday 28th is Helper Appreciation Day. The initiative was established in 2015 as an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution made by domestic workers to many Hong Kong families. The initiative is not intended to be political, but a positive one that aims to inspire acts of gratitude and appreciation.

At Sha Tin College we would like to participate in this initiative by extending our appreciation to the helpers who work in our families. In assembly today, I reminded the Year 8 students of the importance of understanding the sacrifices made by many of our domestic helpers and we explored ways in which we could better show our support for them.

In addition, we are holding a ‘Helpers Coffee Afternoon’ on Wednesday 31st May between 2:30pm and 3:20pm in the Sha Tin College Cafeteria. In conjunction with the Year 7 students, we have asked all Year 8 students to invite their helpers to come to school that afternoon so we can serve them drinks and snacks. The students are planning to make cards for their helpers and these would be presented at the Coffee Afternoon. If your helper and son/daughter/younger siblings would like to attend this occasion, I would be grateful if you could complete the slip below and return it to Ms Ali in the Lower School Office by Friday 26th May.

Working hard to create a better future lies at the heart of the Hong Kong way of life. At the core of many hard-working families there is usually a domestic helper. We think it is important to remind our students to show gratitude to the people who do so much to help them. We are grateful for your kind support in extending our invitation for this event to your helpers.

Warm wishes

Mr J Lewis Ms K Reed
Head of Year 8 Deputy Head of Year 8

To help us organize the catering for the Helpers Coffee Afternoon please indicate if your helper is available to come to school for ‘Helpers Coffee Afternoon’ on Wednesday 31st May between 2:30pm and 3:20pm. Your son/daughter will be expected to attend.

YES

The Helper Coffee afternoon is an extension of the school day and school buses will not be available to take students home at 3:20 pm on this day. You will need to make additional arrangements for your helper and child to get home.

I agree that my child will make their own way home after the Helper Coffee Afternoon.
